Between Mountain And Tree
The Hobbit fanfiction
Chapter 1

“Okay, don't pull! We're going in the forest!” I regret the minute I ever said that.

It was a normal Tuesday afternoon. I had taken my dog, Leo, out for a walk. We were heading right back home, when my German shepherd got unusually curious of the small forest that is by our flat. He pulled his leash, jumped all around, barked playfully, almost dragging me towards the forest. Which isn't a real forest. It is the size of a football stadium, maybe smaller. There's nothing special about it. No, wait. There is nothing special about it that I knew of. Anyway, Leo and I used to walk in it when he was still a small puppy.

“We'll go for a quick walk and then back home, alright?” I said, as I took off my backpack to take my phone and earphones. I put it back on my back and I let Leo walk free. I knew he wouldn't go anywhere without me.

I don't know for how long we had been walking. I was listening to music and Leo was beside me, so I didn't bother to pay a lot of attention to where we were going. Besides, I know the forest by heart. I got lost in my thoughts. Out of the sudden, the music stopped. I took my earphones off and checked my phone, which to my great surprise, was dead. And that's how it happened. That's how I realized something was wrong. And here I am now.

I look around me, but instead of the familiar woods, I am in the middle of a forest I have never seen in my life before. Leo is next to me, but for good measures I put his leash on his collar again. He is motionless, his whole body in alert, his brown eyes gazing around. I stuff my phone back in my pocket. I don't like this place. It feels threatening.

“Alright, don't worry,” I say, and I don't know if I'm comforting Leo or myself. I take a step forward and leaves crack under my shoes. “Hello?” No answer. “Is anybody here?” Leo barks loudly, the way he does when he sees something he's not into. I know this way that I must run.

It doesn't take me long to understand I'm being chased. I can hear voices behind me speaking in a strange language. Leo is faster, and his eyesight and hearing are better than mine, so he leads the way. None of us however knows where we are going. An arrow lands by my feet. What the heck? A branch scratches my face and I can feel my right cheek burning. Leo barks again and a man jumps in front of me. I fall back, terrified, and let out a shrill scream. I get up and run again, but they catch me and blindfold me. I resist, but they are more, and way stronger. I'm out of breath, panicked, tired, and confused. But in all the noise, I hear Leo yelp painfully. Without even thinking, I start shouting, screaming, kicking, anything that can get me out of this and go back home. They let go off my arms and someone throws me down. I give a kick and there is a cry. I found a target.

Still, that doesn't stop them. They pull me up and force me to walk. Someone holds something sharp against my back, so that I won't run away. Two of them grab my arms tightly, and we set off. Alright, calm down. You can make it through... this. I rack my brains trying to understand what happened. I passed out. That's the only explanation. Hit a tree and got a concussion. Now I'm hallucinating. No. It's too real to be a dream...

There is a great noise like chains and something heavy dragged across the floor. I can also hear water. There's no river or stream where I live. Where am I? There is the sound of a big door closing. We must have left the forest but I still feel like I'm going to be attacked any moment. They take the blindfold off and I can finally see who my attackers are. There's six of them, tall with long hair and...bows and arrows? What kind of gang uses arrows? Though that's not a gang. I'd had been thrown into a van if I had been kidnapped by gangsters. And what's that? They have pointy ears and... armor? Wait. I've seen this again somewhere.

Again they start pulling me towards a great door with a big tree elaborately carved on it. I've seen that again, too. But where? I hear a familiar bark and Leo comes next to me. Luckily, he's unhurt.

It's okay, boy, don't worry, everything will be fine.”

So, pointy ears, armor, bows and arrows. I have only a few seconds before they open the door and I come face to face to what awaits me. Elves. The idea crosses my mind. Could it be? What else could they be, actually? Elves, then. Where have I seen them before? They open the door and drag me inside. Come, think! Middle-Earth! Peter Jackson's movies! Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. The forest...the elves...Rivendell? No, it doesn't look like that. Leo lets out a small whine and hides behind my legs. Lothlorien? I look up. It's a big hall, with carved designs on the walls and a pair of huge antlers over a big armchair. Suddenly, I know where I am. I'm in Middle-Earth, in Mirkwood. A deep voice speaking in a different language fills the room. I raise my head, sit straight, close my eyes and take a deep breath before I open them again.

I'm about to meet the king.

A fanfiction I've been working on since I joined deviantART. I'm still not sure whether it will develop into a romance of any sorts, but it's only chapter 1 yet. I don't know how much it'll take me to finish and post the next chapter, but I am already working on it. Leave a comment and tell me what you think of it!:) (Smile)
